writing a book

One of my writing projects for 2013 will be a book focusing on dynamic keys for successful living. Authentic, successful living. And I’ll be seeking to tease out these keys from the Christmas narrative in the scriptures. I don’t know that we fully realize and appreciate the life-potential the incarnation offers us.

There. Conventional thinking about goals is that it’s a good idea to go public with them. At least to someone. It’s said that it keeps you accountable! And it raises your personal commitment.

Actually, here’s the deeper sense of accountability for me. I’m driven by a desire to write something like this. No angel-armies in the sky proclaiming an announcement and assignment. Just desire.

I’m coming to think we are actually accountable to our desires – sustained desires that are true and accurate for our lives.

writing voice

Voice is one of the most important elements in successful writing.  If readers do not pick up our unique writing voice through the words we write, they will tune us out and we’ll lose them.

We may have a meaningful story to relay.  We may have leading-edge content which will really help people.  But if we cannot capture and sustain the reader’s attention, they will not benefit from the story or the content.

But if readers lock in to your signature voice, it’s a different story.  Your readers can actually “hear” your unique signature voice through your words – whether they are on paper or on a screen.

In fifth grade, he was known as the dummy of his class.  It was taken for granted that Ben could take an entire quiz and miss every question.  “I was most likely to end up in jail, reform school, or the grave.”

Holding two to three jobs, his illiterate mother noticed that the wealthy families she worked for invested their time reading books rather than watching television.  She made her two boys turn off the television, read two books a week from the Detroit Public Library, and submit book reports to her.  They didn’t know their mother could not read.  She made marks on the reports anyway.
