Time is a gift. Overflowing with potential.
Should we make resolutions and set goals? Sure. But it’s smart to intentionally place them in the larger setting of STORY. Our lives are a series of smaller stories (sub-plots) composed into our personal LIFE STORY.
Even larger than this… wisdom understands that our life story is set within a much larger story, a META-STORY.
Donald Miller believes our personal goals should be set in the context of NARRATIVE, a Personal Story crafted within a Larger Story…
Here are some tips from Miller to get us started:
- Desire something. A good story involves a person who wants something and is willing to overcome conflict to get it.
- Envision a climatic scene. Begin with the end in mind (as clear as you can envision it), both the smaller stories and the larger story of your life.
- Create an inciting incident. Intentionally. Something that creates upheaval and forces you to a new level.
See Donald Miller’s post for more on these points - Living a Good Story, an Alternative to New Years Resolutions.
Envision Yourself In the Ultimate Story
Let’s recall that The Ultimate Story is the one flowing from the Creator’s pen. Our lives are smaller stories streamed into the composition the Creator is writing (click to tweet this).
So consult the Author about His Story. Keep asking Him about it as you listen for His voice through His Word. We also ask Him about our personal stories. Taken together, our smaller stories are written into the plot of His Big Story.
All of this gets us beyond a list of resolutions that have little meaning, context and flow. Let’s live BIGGER!
