I’ve been challenged recently with upgrading to a higher way of life … a life more accurately aligned to mission. Tune-ups along the way are always a good thing.
What prompted this? Well, I recently heard something (a message/teaching) which triggered some thoughts. Different pieces then came together — previous impressions, maybe things I’ve read, teachings I’ve benefited from, and so on.
This opened the window to a fresh perspective. I’ve found that many times, this is how a new level of understanding surfaces.
We are designed to live in harmony with an expansive mission.
Did you know there’s a New Testament word translated as understanding which literally means a putting together (Greek, sunesis)? Here’s an example in Luke 2:42: And all who heard Him (Jesus at 12 years of age) were amazed at His understanding and answers.
Each of us is placed on this planet on assignment — living with mission in mind. That assignment releases personal fulfillment to us. It benefits people and things around us. And let’s nor forget this … it blesses our personal lives too.
Accurately aligning with mission means becoming radical
Radical: returning to the original.
The first humans — Adam and Eve — were mandated with a mission …
God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule … be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule …”
Meditate on those key thoughts for a several seconds … rule … fruitful … multiply … fill … subdue.
Adam was placed in the Garden to guard and tend (cultivate) it. He was assigned to release the latent potential within creation. The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, but the earth He has given (Heb., assigned) to the sons of men. Psalm 115:16
What have you been assigned to? — live your highest life
Here’s another way to shape this question: what is the Creator asking you to cultivate and develop? Is it in the realm of technology? Agriculture? Business? Medicine? Arts and entertainment? Education? Public policy (government)? Social work? __________?
Boredom … feeling stuck … disillusioned … diminished … we don’t want to be in a place where these words describe our lives. Living in accurate alignment with mission is vital for us.
We could ask this hard question of ourselves: If I’m not living with a sense of mission, what’s the point of my life? Eating and drinking? Self-preservation. Entertainment? Sex?
Think expansively — an abundance mindset
Adam and Eve were to live expansively. Through their descendants, they were to extend the environment of the Garden throughout the earth.
The Creator is into abundant multiplication! Addition bores Him. And He’s certainly not into subtraction and division.
Have you ever seen a maple tree release its helicopter seeds? What a picture of life and multiplication! What about the stars (they’re still being born now)? The entire cosmos burst into existence at His spoken word. And it is still expanding!
The cosmos is communicating!
And He took Him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” Then he believed in the Lord ….” Genesis 15:5-6
Allow God to reset your perspective — look out from your place. See where He is at work. Open up to this question: where is God inviting us to cooperate with Him?
Think about who you’re linked to — the Ultimate Life Coach
The Lord would walk with Adam and Even in the cool of the day (by the way, stay cool if you want to rule). This is what theologians term a Christophany, a pre-incarnate visit of Christ on the earth.
What’s the point? They had a conversational relationship with Christ. I believe this conversation included teaching/coaching about the creation and mentoring them in their role.
Yes, this has all been lost through sin and the Fall of humanity. But we have this opportunity — we can now be restored to Christ!
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
We are re-linked to Christ as we come to Him. We walk with Him in the cool of the day again.
Christ is the Last Adam who restores us to our place of relationship with Him … and to our place of dominion over what He has created. That restoration process has been initiated and is underway! Complete restoration will be realized when Christ comes again. But don’t be deceived. It’s already begin in the hearts of people, and the sphere’s of influence they impact.
YOUR MISSION IS LIKE A GOLDEN PATHWAY … These signs or indicators will speak to you, empowering you to get more accurate about your pathway (and rewarding you for staying on it). For more, see my post — The Golden Pathway to Your Destiny.
- You come alive! When you do the things designed for you, you will experience your highest levels of energy. You will clearly sense it. So will others.
- You’ll smile on the inside. And probably the outside too. Even more, you will feel that Someone above you is smiling. We’re beautiful when we smile … not so much when we scowl.
- Desire fulfilled: a tree of life. You begin to sense your desires will be fulfilled. Here’s what the Scriptures say: “Desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”
- Make yourself happy! We are meant to live with deep-seated gladness or joy. As you discover what’s on your golden pathway, your joy will only deepen. There’s no virtue in being sad or depressed all the time.
- What are you passionate about? Don’t leave passion on the table when this life is up. Get clear and articulate about what your passions are.
- Others will affirm you. People who want your best will see it all over you. You’ll get feedback from them that you’re on the right path. They will actually enjoy the higher energy and joy you’re radiating.
- Circumstances will align. As you progress further and with more accuracy on your golden pathway, circumstances will progressively align with your design. They will support you more and more. Good things start happening.
Think about connection with others — it’s vital
The community of the Godhead created the community of marriage. Certainly marriage is a significant connection.
The principle we see, though, is also the need to be aligned with others. To live expansively, to live a life of mission, we will need to create community with others.
Remember this though — our focus is mission first. The mission creates the community. We’re not seeking community for the sake of community of alone (sort of a “Cheers” experience, if you know anything of the older sitcom).
Christ empowers the individual. But it’s all set within the context of relating to others. Together, we are more.
So what would it be like to live with a sense of awe about God’s Story? And to realize that our Personal Story is a part of a much Larger Story? In what ways are you being invited to live with mission?
