At first I struggled with this quote. Why should the past “sleep” on the bosom of Christ as He accompanies me? It must be that Chambers is referring to Christ bearing our past, even as he walks with us into the irresistible future. In His grace, the past is no longer awake, no longer affecting us.
I think so. I also think that when it “sleeps” on the bosom of Christ the heavy part is for Him to bear. But the strength of the past becomes a dream asleep upon Him for Him to awaken at just the right moment. Recently my family and I used Soul Surfer as part of a family time and discussed several passages quoted in it as they applied to our lives. Even when tragedy hits we can say, “All things work together for good…” we can look seriously at Phil. 3 and know that we can let the encumbrances of the past not weigh us down and run towards the fulfillment of calling that we have heard from Jesus the Great Caller.

I like the forward thinking, Gary, and how Christ will use the strength of our past. Thanks for the comment.
