Quite often life has this way of saying (or screaming), “This is reality. Get used to it!”
We don’t think in the category of establishing reality, do we? Our default perspective is that reality is something eternal to us. And it acts upon us.
The truth is how we respond to “This is reality …!” makes all the difference for us and those around us.
Will we respond proactively? Or will we react passively, silently submitting to what’s happening … or what you think may happen?
A belief challenge: as we connect with God, we can define reality. Adam seen in Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’ on the Sistine Chapel ceiling
Max DePree says, “The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality ….”
You think, “Well, I’m not a leader.” But you are — you lead your own life. And that affects what’s around you.
Beyond our own personal world, whether we have a formal office or title of leader is not the real issue. We are all meant to provide a lead on something bigger than ourselves.
We have far more capacity to shape outcomes than we realize …
Reach back further to understand who you really are
But I want to reach back further than a specific decision and briefly touch on what we believe about ourselves and how we think. What is our worldview? Because our decisions are sourced in a larger belief system we have created over time.
How we see and define things is what makes the difference. We have the capacity to “name” things — challenges and needs, opportunities, situations, initiativies ….
In Genesis, we see something in the prototypical human — Adam — which can powerfully motivate us
Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
The Creator wanted to see what he would call it … whatever he called it, that was its name.
Adam was gifted with insight, perception and intelligence to see into the nature of things. He understood what they were meant to be — their design and intended purpose. And he was able to bring definition.
We have an amazing opportunity to establish reality
This is about more than the animal kingdom. This is an archetypical ability in humanity — an original, perfect pattern or model. We are meant to do this.
We are meant to cooperate, to partner with creation (and ultimately, the Creator). We certainly have a powerful role to play in establishing reality.
It does not matter what the challenge may be. It does not matter what the opportunity is. Small or big, gaze upon it with powerful intention. Come to a personal understanding about what the design of the matter is to be.
Pray. Understand. Believe. Speak. And practically move in the direction of that design.
Everything can elevate to a higher level — the level of design.
Stay with it. Press through the dry, “hopeless” times. I think we’ll be surprised at what we begin to experience. Celebrate every small victory and advancement, knowing that larger ones will come!
Are you settling? Are you being acted upon? What “wins” have you experienced? What’s coming for you and those you influence?
