Hey, manly men … I’ve just discovered a site you may want to take a look at, The Art of Manliness. Vintage. I’ve already subscribed. Here’s a guest post on a huge need in leadership today: true statesmanship.
Pericles of Athens
The author of this post was impacted by Dr. J. Rufus Fears, Professor of Classics at the University of Oklahoma. One of the things Dr. Fears emphasized in his teaching was that a politician and a statesman are not the same thing. Rather than being a tyrant, a statesman is a free leader of a free people.
To be a true statesman, a leader must possess 4 critical qualities:
- A bedrock of principles
- A moral compass
- A vision
- The ability to build a consensus to achieve that vision
After taking this for a read, ask yourself: Do you think there are true statesmen among us now? If not, which of these qualities are the politicians out there lacking?
